tonight i slipped on the republican pearls and headed out with my husband to a fundraising event for a candidate for governor. i was having a very pleasant time sipping my wine and being thankful for the fabulous weather when the speech slipped into discussing education reform. he hit the party key words 'charter schools' and 'teacher accountability', which are great terms to throw around but i'm always very skeptical until i hear exactly how it will be implemented. then he transitioned into improving our higher education institutions and how we have to start graduating more creative problem solvers to compete in this global world.
yes. yes we do. but do you know why we're not? because we're spending all of our time getting our children to memorize facts and learn how to take a test instead of teaching them problem solving skills and stretching their minds with creative thinking. that great 'teacher accountability' buzz term is getting in the way of actually teaching our children.
it was all i could do not to tell him i knew the solution to this, and that he could find it for himself at 21st century thinker.
