Isn't truth stanger than fiction? I'm very sorry to hear of your class' loss. How can this become a teachable moment? Sometimes it's best not to take too much lead with a subject like this. Your students will let you know how much to tell and how to approach it. Honesty is best. I once had to explain to 1st and 2nd graders the reasons why our class pet hamster was euthanized. Had cancer. Very tough, but probably one of the deepest and best conversational experiences in our classroom that year. Good luck!
